Permit requirements
This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.
Seasonal restrictions
Before lighting a fire on public conservation land, check it's alright to light. Extinguish all fires before leaving huts and campsites. How to minimise the risk of fire.

Animals present are red deer and chamois, in low to moderate numbers.
General information
This block takes in the Blue River catchment including its north and south branches. The valley floor offers reasonable travel through mature silver beech/tahina forest and some small gorges, with a marked track and then a marked route. Higher up the valley walls are steep and bluffy.
This block is balloted for the ROAR period during the months of March and April.
Access
Access is from the Blue Pools car park on the Haast Highway (SH6), 9 km northwest of Makarora township. The turnoff to the Blue Valley is marked by a sign immediately after crossing the swingbridge.
