General information

Permits are available online as 'Taranaki Forests' under the Central North Island hunting block.

The 1637 ha Taramoukou Conservation Area is formed by a series of ridges up from the headwaters of the Onaero River. These ridges are broken, with narrow tops, steep faces and numerous slips. Wetlands have formed in the valley floors.

The area is predominantly tawa with tawhero, scattered rimu, miro, tōtara and kahikata. Rata, stunted tōtara and hīnau grow in small quantities along the ridge tops, while a large plateau of kohekohe is the most extensive block in the district.

North Island robin, fernbirds, kaka and kiwi are present.
