A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

Dogs with a DOC permit (contact the relevant DOC office) and a current kiwi aversion certificate only.

General Information

Permits are available online as 'Taranaki Forests' under the Central North Island hunting block.

Adjacent to the Whangamomona Conservation Area, this 435 ha scenic reserve has similar rugged hills deeply dissected by streams.

Tawa forest is dominant on slopes with black beech on ridge tops with kamahi and rewarewa also present. Toetoe and raupō can be found in wetlands along valley bottoms.

Kiwi are present in this area.

A picnic area off SH43 on the Whangamomona Saddle leads to a walking track through reserve.

Access is via SH43 at the Whangamomona Saddle - then Anchor Track.

Huts

There are no DOC huts in this reserve.

Dogs

Dogs are prohibited except where authorisation has been granted by DOC. People wishing to take a dog into this area need to get a permit from the local DOC office and have a current kiwi aversion certificate.

Avian awareness and avoidance training

To take dogs across private property, or tracks crossing farmland, you must get permission from the landowner.
