Introduction

Located south-west of Whangārei, Tangihua Forest is a popular destination for hunters. This block provides the hunter with hardwood forest hunting conditions for pigs and goats.

Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

Dog access

Dogs with a DOC permit (contact the relevant DOC office) and a current kiwi aversion certificate only.

Access

Legal public access is available from Omana Road on the southern side of the range.

From the carpark take a short 1 km walk along a public access that is fenced between 2 farms to the forest edge. You will reach the lower Pikiwahine valley where walking tracks spread out into the forest from the Lions Lodge complex. On the northern face is a trampers hut.

Dogs

  • The number of hunting dogs is limited to three per permittee.
  • It is a requirement that all dogs have current certification for kiwi/bird aversion training.
  • Dogs must be kept under control at all times.
  • Dogs are not permitted in DOC campgrounds.

Huts and campsites

You can stay at Tangihua Hut in Tangihua Forest.

Hunters out of the district who wish to spend a few days exploring the Whangārei area hunting blocks can stay at a number of local DOC managed campsites:

  • Puriri Bay campsite at Whangaruru is a 20 min drive from Russell Forest.
  • Uretiti Beach campsite at Ruakaka Beach is a 30 min drive from Tangihua and Otaika Forests and 10min from Mareretu.
    Otamure Camp at Whananaki on the east coast is a 30 min drive from some of the other smaller hunting blocks that are also included in your online permit.

Firearms are to be kept secure and safe in your vehicle and out of sight of other campers while staying in campgrounds.

No dogs, horses, cats, birds, or pets are permitted in campgrounds.

Additional information

No firearm discharge is permitted in two areas of Tangihua Forest due to consideration of other users and possible damage to facilities present:

  • Within 500 m of Tangihua Lions Lodge in the Pikiwahine
  • Within 300 m of Horokaka Repeater

Firearms and ammo magazines must remain unloaded when walking through these two sites.
