Introduction

Fallow deer, pigs and goats are found in the lowland forest of Murumuru Conservation Area.

Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

Seasonal restrictions

Closed 1 September to 31 October for lambing.

Dogs with a DOC permit (contact the relevant DOC office) and a current kiwi aversion certificate only.

Fallow deer, red deer, pigs and goats are all present in this reserve.

General information

Permits are available online as 'Murumuru Conservation Area' under the Central North Island hunting block.

Lowland forest. Also areas of manuka and grass. The terrain is very steep where the block falls towards the Whanganui River. Kiwi are known to be present.

Access

From State Highway 4, turn onto Ruatiti Road north of Raetihi. Continue along this road until reaching Ruatiti. Turn onto Murumuru Road and continue along this road until reaching the sign posted entrance.

Dogs

A separate permit is required to hunt with dogs. All dogs must be avian avoidance certified. Contact the local DOC office for details.

Huts

There are no DOC huts in this reserve.

Additional information

There is a track maintained by an adjoining landowner running through the reserve and there is low visitor use. Grazing licence at northwest end of reserve.
