A 44,476 hectare hunting area in Whānganui National Park.

Red deer is the main species to hunt in the Ruahine Forest Park although some goats can be found in the southern end of the ranges.

Fallow deer, pigs and goats are present in low numbers in Puketarata Scenic Reserve. Possums are present in moderate numbers and permits for commercial hunting are available for this area.

Pigs and goats are found in Rangi Scenic Reserve. The area is comprised of rolling to steep terrain.

Paetawa Scenic Reserve is situated on the true right of the Whanganui River and is accessible only by boat.

This hunting block including Riariaki Conservation Area and Pairawahipi Scenic Reserve is closed until further notice.

Whitiau Scientific Reserve lies in the coastal strip north of the Whangaehu River. Hunting rabbits is permitted here.

Hunting opportunities in Whanganui National Park (Atene to Ranana), Pitangi Scenic Reserve, and Ohutu and Koriniti conservation areas includes pigs, goats and low numbers of fallow deer.

Fallow deer, pigs and goats are all hunted in Tarere Conservation Area. Kiwi are known to be present in the mixed podocarp forest here.

Rimunui Conservation Area is comprised of podocarp/tawa forest with some beech ridges. Fallow deer, pigs and goats are present.

Tapuarau Conservation Area which used to be known as Hawken’s Lagoon features upland game, waterfowl and rabbit hunting opportunities.

Situated on the true right bank of the Whanganui River, the only access to Otawaki Scenic Reserve is by boat. Pigs and goats are found here.

The regenerating forest of the Kauarapaoa Scenic Reserve and Mystery Block Conservation Area are home to kiwi. The area is most popular for hunting pigs using dogs.

The steep terrain of Kokaka and Taheke Conservation Areas along with Rotokahu and Retaruke Scenic Reserves are home to kiwi and blue ducks. Red deer, fallow deer, pigs and goats are all hunted here.

Kapara Conservation Area along with Ahoroa and Moeawatea Scenic Reserves lie within the Waitotara and Whenuakura River catchments. Goats and pigs are found here.

Located 67 kilometres north-west of Whanganui, both the Jean D'Arcy Conservation Area and Powatunga Scenic Reserve are cloaked in podocarp/tawa forest. Deer, goats and pigs are found here.

Low numbers of goats and fallow deer are found in Moukuku Scenic Reserve. Located 28 kilometres north of Whanganui, the small reserve features tawa/scrub hardwood forest.

Fallow deer, pigs and goats are found in the lowland forest of Murumuru Conservation Area.

Goats, fallow deer, red deer and pigs are hunted in the Whanganui National Park (west of river) and adjoining scenic reserves and conservation areas.

Low numbers of goats, pigs and fallow deer are found in Tokomaru East Block Conservation Area. Now restricted to foot traffic, the old Tokomaru East Road passes through the centre of the block.

In Waitōtara Conservation Area and Rotokohu Scenic Reserve goats, pigs and fallow deer are present in low numbers.

Red deer is the main species to hunt in the Ruahine ranges. Some sika deer are also present. Hunting areas include a combination of bush, slips and open tussock tops.
