Pigs and goats are found in the lowland forests of Motutara Scenic Reserve.

Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

Dogs with a DOC permit (contact the relevant DOC office) and a current kiwi aversion certificate only.

General information

Permits are available online as 'Taumarunui Reserves' under the Central North Island hunting block.

Lowland forest with some open grass areas, the terrain is steep to rolling.

Access

From State Highway 43, turn onto Kururau Road just south of Taumarunui. The northern end of the reserve is accessed directly off Kururau Road. Access to the southern end of the block may be obtained through private land from State highway 45 just to the east of Te Whakarae. The block and access point are sign posted.

Dogs

A separate permit is required to hunt with dogs. All dogs must be avian avoidance certified. Contact the local DOC office for details.

Huts

There are no DOC huts in this reserve.

Additional information

An old track follows the Motutara Stream part way through the block from the southern end of reserve.
