About this hunting block
Pigs occur throughout the reserve network, often in high numbers. They move around a lot however, so local knowledge is important in locating them. Often the best access is by boat from the lake, but there is also a number of roads which provide access. It is possible to obtain permission from adjoining farms as well.
General information
Part of the Taupō Reserves and Conservation Areas, the western and northern shores of Lake Taupō are covered in regenerating scrubland at varying stages of growth. Much of this land has been reserved to provide a buffer between farmland and the lake.
This area includes Hingarae, Otaketake Stream, Tutaeuaua, Waihora Stream, Waikino and Kawakawa Bay scenic reserves.
The terrain is often steep and bluffy, with thick vegetation. This makes it a challenge to hunt. This area is also know for the holes or 'tomos' formed in the pumice soil, which are a hazard to hunters and their dogs alike. Carrying a rope is an advisable safety measure if hunting the area.
The best hunting is from May to August, when most pigs are close to the farm edges. Hunting pressure can help farmers reduce pasture damage from pigs at this time, and some will give access accordingly. Stock worrying is a problem, so farmers want reliable hunters with well controlled dogs.
