We're refurbishing the building that houses our visitor centre in Arthur's Pass National Park. Get more information and come along to a public information meeting.

Date:  29 January 2018

The visitor centre tells visitors about the area’s spectacular natural environment and history ,and provides recreation and safety information.

We are upgrading the structural integrity of the building to bring it up to current building standards. The work will also improve the building's weathertightness, climate control and visitor experience.

The interior of the building will be completely refurbished with new interpretation, facilities and a small café.

The exterior architecture of the building will not be significantly altered apart from a viewing window installed in the northern wall to provide natural light, a viewpoint up the valley and emergency exit.

The historic Cobb and Co Stagecoach has been on long-term loan from the Christchurch Museum and will be staying at the visitor centre.

Timeline for the refurbishment

The draft concept designs have been completed, and the development and detailed design stage is expected to be completed by mid-April 2018. There will then be a 3-4 month procurement process.

Construction should begin in September 2018 and the new building is expected to open in early 2019.

The building will be closed for several months but a temporary visitor centre will be open in Arthur’s Pass. The site for this is being finalised.
