Yesterday 52 birds from the Kaki Recovery Programme's captive breeding centre in Twizel were released at Mailbox Inlet near Tekapo.

Students from Waituna School in Waimate and Twizel School and also members of the Waimate Rotary Club were on hand to release the birds.

Another 52 birds are to be released in the Tasman Valley tomorrow.
