A fire began in the early hours of this morning (Monday 3 February 2014) near Lookout Road, Waipoua Forest, Northland. The fire was reported at approximately 12:30 am.
An initial team of Department of Conservation (DOC) rural fire fighters and forestry contractors have been in attendance and have been battling a two hectare fire, which has spread through native forest and scrubland.
At this stage, the fire is under control. There is no threat to Tane Mahuta, and the Waipoua Forest remains open to visitors.
A fresh team will be brought in today to relieve the early morning fire fighters.
Today, crews will establish containment lines, firebreaks, search for hotspots, and wet down areas to help prevent any potential flare-ups.
