The River Track along the Tongariro is a favourite mountain biking and walking track linking the Major Jones and Red Hut Bridge footbridges. One major obstacle to mountain bikers fully enjoying the experience was the flight of steps just downstream of the Red Hut Bridge.
All those bikers who had to carry their bike up and down the steps can rejoice in the fact they no longer have to put up with this inconvenience, thanks to the excellent new section of track which is now open for use.
The new realignment has been created to avoid the steps by creating 500 meters of new track. The gentle contours are designed to take the sweat out of the old climb, or allow for a sweeping, flowing descent.
The steps will remain in place as well, as this is a favourite route for anglers in a hurry to get to their favourite spot on the Tongariro River.
The one way journey takes about 30 minutes biking or 1 hour 15 minutes walking from bridge to bridge and is a great family trip.
