Introduction

There are a high number of goats and possums in the Pouiatoa Conservation Area. The reserve contains steep hill country that drains into the Waitara and Urenui rivers.

Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by a 'restricted area permit'. Contact the DOC office managing the hunting area.

Dog access

Dogs with a DOC permit (contact the relevant DOC office) and a current kiwi aversion certificate only.

About this hunting block

This area has a high numbers of goats and possums with some pigs and a few fallow deer if you are lucky.

General information

The 3854 ha Pouiatoa Conservation Area is untracked and mainly steep with many inaccessible side streams that are prone to slips.

The Pouiatoa forest is mostly unlogged tawa and kamahi with a scattering of rimu, rata, rewarewa, miro, matai and kahikatea. Black and hard beech can also be found.

Poiatoa is predator trapped by the East Taranaki Environment Trust to protect the local kiwi population. As such permit conditions do apply. Stay clear of traps and be aware that there may be people in the area.

Access

There is no formed public access to Pouiatoa Conservation Area. Access is primarily through private farmland off Piko Road or Tarata Road.

Landholders

Permission to access Pouiatoa Conservation Area via private land must be gained by arrangements with adjoining landholders.

Huts

There are no DOC huts in this reserve.

Dogs

Dogs are prohibited except where authorisation has been granted by DOC. People wishing to take a dog into this area need to get a permit from the local DOC office and have a current kiwi aversion certificate.

Avian awareness and avoidance training

To take dogs across private property, or tracks crossing farmland, you must get permission from the landowner.
