About this hunting block
Pigs and red deer are present in the warmer months, but populations are highly mobile and tend to move on when disturbed.
General information
This 750 ha block lies on South Rough Ridge, between the Manorburn (Greenland) and Poolburn Reservoirs. It slopes gently on the eastern side with a steeper west face down to Long Valley. Snow covered in winter, it has numerous tors, alpine grasslands, and wetland areas.
Access
Access is from Long Valley Ridge Road, off the Old Dunstan Road between Poolburn Reservoir and Linnburn Runs Road. This is a 4WD track that is closed to vehicles (due to weather conditions) from the Tuesday after Queens Birthday Weekend until 30 September each year.
Check with Central Otago District Council for other closures. Please minimise disturbance by ensuring you stay on the main track and using this access only when conditions are dry.
There is a section of track 400 metres before Serpentine Church that is damaged and impassable by vehicle. You can still drive up to this damaged section and park for access to the hunting area nearest the Serpentine Church and diggings.
Access to the open hunting block via the Upper Manorburn Road to Long Valley Creek is by permission only as it crosses private land.
For access permission contact: Mr DG Small, Goulburn Station; phone +64 3 447 4011.
