Introduction

Whitiau Scientific Reserve lies in the coastal strip north of the Whangaehu River. Hunting rabbits is permitted here.

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by a 'restricted area permit'. Contact the DOC office managing the hunting area.

Dog access

Dogs with a DOC permit (contact the relevant DOC office) and a current kiwi aversion certificate only.

About this hunting block

You can only hunt using shotguns and .22 rifles in this block. Rimfire only, due to underground gas pipeline.

General information

Permits are not available online for this hunting area. Contact the local DOC office for a permit – see below.

This area is along the coastal strip south of the natural gas pump station to the Whangaehu River. The area is coastal dune country with swampy hollows, wetlands, saltmarsh and river bank.

Access         

At low tide, this block can be accessed by four wheel drive and walking along the beach from Airport Road. No vehicles are permitted in the scientific reserve except on the white poled routes.

Dogs

A separate permit is required to hunt with dogs. All dogs must be avian avoidance certified. Contact the local DOC office for details.
