Introduction

Low numbers of goats and fallow deer are found in Moukuku Scenic Reserve. Located 28 kilometres north of Whanganui, the small reserve features tawa/scrub hardwood forest.

Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by a 'restricted area permit'. Contact the DOC office managing the hunting area.

Dog access

Dogs with a DOC permit (contact the relevant DOC office) and a current kiwi aversion certificate only.

About this hunting block

Low numbers of goats in the bluff area near the southern boundary and the occasional fallow deer are present.

Special restrictions:

  • Permit for two consecutive days only
  • One firearm per hunting party 
  • Must be displayed on vehicle dashboard.
  • Do not venture onto neighbouring private property.

Access

Directly off the Whanganui River Road approximately 28km north of Whanganui, the reserve is sign posted.

Dogs

A separate permit is required to hunt with dogs. All dogs must be avian avoidance certified. Contact the local DOC office for details.

Huts

There are no DOC huts in this reserve.

Additional information

There are no tracks and very low visitor use.
