Introduction
In the Whanganui District the large number of conservation areas and scenic reserves, as well as Whanganui National Park, provide hunters with numerous hunting opportunities.The Whanganui District hunting area covers land along the coast from the Turakina to the Patea River and significant lowland forest inland to Ohura, Taumarunui and Raetihi. There is over 166,000 ha of Public Conservation Land within this region, including Whanganui National Park and the Waitotara Conservation Area.
The district provides many excellent hunting opportunities, whether your quarry be fallow deer, red deer, pigs or goats. There are also a few areas in which hunting permits can be gained for water fowl, upland birds and rabbit shooting.
The Whanganui District is characterised by its steep, extremely hilly terrain, deeply incised rivers and very extensive tracks of lowland forest.
