How to book and pay
Most huts can't be booked in advance – they operate on a first come, first served basis. You pay with a Backcountry Hut Pass or Hut Tickets that you must buy before your trip.
Some huts can be booked and you pay when you book. You can use a Backcountry Hut Pass to pay for some bookings, you can't use Backcountry Hut Tickets to pay for any bookings.
Some Great Walk huts must be booked all year, some can only be booked in the Great Walks season (this varies for each Great Walk, each year). When bookings are required, you pay when you book and you can't pay with a Backcountry Hut Pass or Hut Tickets.
Some club huts require a booking, and you usually pay at a DOC visitor centre or directly to the club. You generally can't pay with a Backcountry Hut Pass or Hut Tickets.
Backcountry Hut Pass
This pass gives you unlimited use of most Serviced and Standard huts, as well as most campsites outside Serviced huts, for the period you buy the pass for.
If you're planning on making multiple stays within a 6 or 12 month period, a Backcountry Hut Pass will save you money.

Extensions to the pass due to COVID-19
Visit or contact a DOC visitor centre to receive an extension on your Backcountry Hut Pass. We will issue you a new pass with an extended expiry date. Passes will be extended by the amount of time that huts were closed during New Zealand’s COVID-19 lockdown.
How to use the hut pass
Buy the hut pass and take it with you to the hut.
In some cases, you can use your hut pass to pay for a booking (check individual hut pages to see if hut passes can be used at the hut). Create/update your account on our booking system. Under 'Apply for a discount', select 'Backcountry Hut Pass Holder' and upload a scan of your pass. Once we've verified your pass, it will automatically be applied when you make a booking.
Note, Backcountry Hut Passes can't be used at vehicle or boat accessible campsites.
