How to buy Backcountry Hut Tickets
You can buy tickets from:
- DOC visitor centres, and
- selected Backcountry Hut Ticket retailers.
Prices
Prices differ for Standard and Serviced huts.
From 1 July 2026:
- Standard Hut prices will increase to $15 (youth $7.50) year round.
- Serviced Huts prices will remain at $25, but with some seasonal increases.
DOC accommodation price changes 2026/2027.
In order to make use of all existing tickets with these price changes, we will use the tickets based on their denomination value only, where the colour no longer matters (like bank notes). The following will apply:
For Standard Huts, 1 July price:
- for a single adult use $10 + $5 tickets
- for a single youth we will accept payment rounded down to the $5 ticket
- or bookings of multiple adults/youth, tickets will be accepted for payment that add up to within $5 of the total fee.
For Serviced Huts, 1 July price:
- where Hut Ticket values do not exactly match the total fee required, Tickets will be accepted for payment that add up to within $5 of the total fee
- note: all Serviced Huts will be bookable before the end of 2026.

How to use Hut Tickets
Buy the required Hut Tickets and take them with you. Put your tickets into the honesty box at the hut.
Note: you can't pay for bookings with Hut Tickets.
Individually priced huts
Use a combination of Hut Tickets to make up the required fee. For example:
- For a $35 fee, use 1 x $25 Serviced Hut Ticket and 1 x $10 Standard Hut Ticket (= $35)
- For a $38 fee, use 1 x $25 Serviced Hut ticket and 1 X $12.50 Serviced Hut youth ticket (=$37.50 …i.e. acceptable payment within $5 of fee)
- For a $45 fee, use 1 x $25 Serviced Hut Ticket and 2 x $10 Standard Hut Tickets (= $45)
