From the old Waiuta town site, 'Pro Road' winds up to the top of the country's deepest mineshaft (879 metres) and foundations of the ball mill where quartz was ground to extract gold.

The mine shaft is sealed over by concrete, so you cannot see down into it. However, there any many mining relics to see and fantastic views over Waiuta.

If walking back to Waiuta, you can take a short cut down a historic track that was used by the miners. It starts just below the mine, then rejoins 'Pro Road' partway down.

Waiuta is signposted from the Reefton highway (SH7), 21 km south of Reefton. Follow the sealed and shingle road a further 16 km to Waiuta.

Unstable historic structures and hidden holes

Keep to the formed tracks and roads, as there are hidden holes, tunnels and unstable historic structures off the tracks. There is also rusty metal, rotten timber and broken glass. Respect warnings signs and safety barriers, and supervise children at all times.

Contaminated soil and water

Dangerous chemicals remain in the ground around the mine sites. Do not disturb the ground. Eat at the provided picnic tables. The water in this area is not suitable for drinking.

Wasps

Watch out for wasps, especially during the summer months.

Shared use tracks

Some of the tracks and roads at Waiuta are shared by walkers, drivers and bikers. Watch for others.

Snowy Battery Track is closed

The Snowy River Stamper Battery site and Snowy Battery Track are closed. Historic mining activities have contaminated the site with excessive levels of arsenic, mercury and cyanide. The site will remain closed until it can be decontaminated.
