1.4 km return return via same track
Opoutere Beach is known for its untouched natural beauty. It has over 5 km of unspoilt white sand, rolling surf, and tranquil waters of the Wharekawa Harbour.
The area is also home to several endangered species of native sea birds, including the New Zealand dotterel.
From Whangamatā, drive north on SH25 for 11 km until you reach the turnoff to Opotuere Road. The carpark to access the walk is approximately 4 km from the turnoff on the right.
- Dogs and vehicles are prohibited.
- Do not enter fenced-off areas as they protect barely visible eggs that lie in shallow scapes in the sand.
- This beach is dangerous with lots of rips.
- There is a partial track closure in place due to unsafe trees. This closure does not affect access to the beach.
