Volunteer hut wardens are welcome at any time, but the main season is from October through April.
Description
Te Puia Hut is the only Serviced DOC hut in the Kaweka Forest Park. The Mohaka River is just a few minute's walk from the front porch, and provides opportunities for swimming and fishing. The Mangatainoka Hot Springs are nearby. The track to the hut is gradual and relatively short, making the hut a popular choice with young families and new trampers.
Tasks
The primary role of a hut warden is to help visitors enjoy their stay. You will be expected to:
- provide information to visitors on request.
- check hut passes and tickets and record compliance.
- clean the hut and undertaken minor maintenance, as needed.
What to expect
Accommodation: There is a separate room for hut warden accommodation, with its own cooking and sleeping areas as well as its own (secure) entrance.
Time required: You must be able to stay for a minimum of 7 consecutive nights.
Fitness level required: You'll be fit and healthy, and capable of tramping 3–5 hours with a pack.
Experience required: Ideally you'll be familar with the Kaweka Forest Park and have backcountry experience.
