Waiuta field trip

Waiuta is one of the West Coast's best known ghost towns located 21 km south of Reefton.

It was once a gold town and functioned until 1951 when one of the two mine shafts collapsed. Repair was considered uneconomic so it was the end of the mine and the end of the town.

At Waiuta students can take a trip back in time. The ghost town includes remnants of Blackwater Mine, a police station and a rugby field. Combined with the environmental issues and recreation options in the area, Waiuta provides options for interesting and exciting outdoor education experiences and learning.
