This 2003-04 review looked at what facilities we had and what facilities we needed to manage an appropriate range of recreation opportunities into the foreseeable future.

The Department ran a public consultation process aimed at confirming with the public the mix of visitor facilities needed to provide the recreational opportunities most desired on public conservation land.

Summary

The DOC Recreation Opportunity Review was a public consultation process undertaken over 2003 – 2004 by each of the then 14 conservancies (local regions), to consider what recreational opportunities are most desired by the visiting public – and to tailor a mix of visitor facilities accordingly.

This initiative followed the provision of additional government funding announced in 2002, to better manage the large network of visitor facilities provided on public conservation lands.

As conservation management strategies and national park management plans are reviewed, these topics are revisited, so the Recreation opportunity review results should be seen as a point-in-time snapshot of public views and DOC’s resulting negotiated position.
