The Kaikoura North Coast hunting area is a group of coastal reserves approximately 20 km north or Kaikoura. Blue Duck Scientific Reserve is included in the block. It is steep - the highest point, Patutu, is 1160 metres. It is a mix of forest, mainly regenerating podocarp and manuka, and open grassed areas.
Red deer, pigs, goats and chamois (in low numbers) are found here.
There are 3 main access points with parking areas – at Half Moon Bay, Okiwi Bay and Seaward Valley Road (Blue Duck Valley).
The main track through the reserve is an old 4WD track which is not maintained. This is generally suitable for quad bikes, but can be very muddy and rutted when wet.
Be careful when using this track as it is becoming popular for walking and mountain biking.
Access off the northern end of Seaward Valley Road requires permission from Dave Pickering, phone +64 3 319 5266
Any other access is through private land and would require permission. The Department of Conservation does not have a list of contacts for this area.
