About this hunting block

Location

Ngaawapurua Hut is located at the confluence of the Ngaruroro River and the Ngaawapurua (Harkness) Stream in a large open clearing.

Access

Hunters visiting the Ngaawapurua will generally be limited to bush hunting. The nearest open tops are the Te Ruatakaikare and Omarukokere tops and the Manson Country. Reaching any of these tops will require a long rigorous climb with the closest (Omarukokere) containing some difficult bluffs with steep gully approaches.

The lower stream gullies on each side of the Ngaawapurua Stream above the hut are strongly recommended for hunting. The hut's location provides easy access to the adjoining beech forest. The Ngaruroro river banks, especially below the hut, can be difficult to negotiate with steep climbs required to clear the river gorges.

Note: Private Maori land on the true right bank of the Ngaruroro River has no access.

Making the best use of main tracks when planning a hunting adventure will help ensure a safe and easy return.

Dogs

Only registered, avian aversion certified hunting dogs, guide dogs, companion dogs (certified by the Top Dog Companion Trust) and dogs used for special services (including conservation management activities) are permitted in the park. All other dogs are banned.
