About this hunting block
Location
Manson Bivouac is located in western Kaweka Forest Park in the area known as the “Manson Country”. This area is separated from the rest of the Kaweka Forest Park by the Ngaruroro River. The Manson area was originally grazed by sheep in the 1860s and the surrounding countryside was subjected to large fires that devastated the native vegetation.
Access
Hunters visiting the Manson area can enjoy open top or bush/creek clearing hunting. Hunting can be undertaken close to the bivouac or by climbing to higher locations away from the immediate bivouac area for the more adventurous. Access is available to some of the park’s northeastern spurs that adjoin the Spion Kop main ridge or the scrub covered areas south and east of the bivouac that are divided by small creek systems. Early morning or late evening hunts are likely to put the hunter on to feeding deer out in the open in gullies off the main Manson Tops.
Making the best use of main tracks when planning a hunting adventure will help ensure a safe and easy return.
Dogs
Only registered, avian aversion certified hunting dogs, guide dogs, companion dogs (certified by the Top Dog Companion Trust) and dogs used for special services (including conservation management activities) are permitted in the park. All other dogs are banned.
