Introduction

Black Birch Range is a popular hunting area. The Black Birch Bivouac is located in the eastern Kaweka Forest Park, between the Lotkow Roadend and the picnic area at Little's Clearing.

Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

Dog access

Dogs with a DOC permit (contact the relevant DOC office) and a current kiwi aversion certificate only.

Location

Black Birch Bivouac is located on the Black Birch range in the eastern Kaweka Forest Park, between the Lotkow Roadend and Little's Clearing picnic area.

Access

The vegetation is surrounded by open rocky areas,clay pans, regenerating native vegetation and Pinus contorta. There are some flat to undulating stretches of beech forest/clay pans and open tussock areas that provide for easy hunting opportunities.

Making the best use of the main track when planning a hunting adventure will help ensure a safe and easy return.

Dogs

Only registered, avian aversion certified hunting dogs, guide dogs, companion dogs (certified by the Top Dog Companion Trust) and dogs used for special services (including conservation management activities) are permitted in the park. All other dogs are banned.
