About this hunting block
General information
Located in Lake Sumner Forest Park, the terrain of the South Hurunui hunting block is moderate to steep. Vegetation is predominantly beech forest with some shrubland, tussock and open tops.
Pigs, red deer and chamois are present in low to moderate numbers.
Other hunters may be encountered. Take precautions and identify your target.
Access
Access to the area is via Lake Sumner Road and Esk Head Station. Access permission is required from Esk Head Station.
There is also foot access from Lake Sumner over the track behind Home Bay via Lake Mason. Access permission is required from Lakes Station and Esk Head Station.

Note: The bivvy in North Esk is dilapidated and planned for removal. The DOC research hut in the South Hurunui is not available to the public.

Hunters are advised to check for current pesticide operations that may be in progress where they intend to hunt.
