A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

Dogs allowed. Keep dog under control at all times.

About this hunting block

Species available for game bird hunting include mallard duck, grey duck, shoveler, paradise shelduck, black swan and pūkeko. Canada geese can also be hunted here from the first weekend in May to 28 July for holders of small game permits. 

General information

Wainono Lagoon is near the township of Waimate, and about 35 km south of Timaru.

The lagoon covers 350 hectares. It is a conservation area managed by DOC and provides habitat for some 57 different bird species, many resident and others migratory.

To get a game bird permit for Lake Wainono, contact info@doc.govt.nz.

You'll also need a Fish & Game game bird permit and a firearms licence.

For a small game permit to hunt Canada geese contact 0800 ASK DOC (0800 275 362). Canada geese can only be hunted from the first weekend in May to 29 July.

You must only use steel shot in this area.

Access

There are several access points to the lagoon: Lake Road off SH1 next to the junction of SH82, and 4WD access to the north via Hook Beach Road or to the southern end of the lagoon via Poingdestres Road.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed for bird retrieval but must be under effective control. Remove any faeces.
