About this hunting block

Animals present are red deer and chamois, in low to moderate numbers.

General information

This block takes in the West Matukituki catchment above Aspiring Hut, the Rob Roy and Glacier Burn catchments, and the upper slopes of Homestead Peak. The block contains a mixture of silver/tahina and mountain/tamauka beech forest, broad grassy flats, alpine shrubland and tussock, and rocky and glaciated peaks.

The block divides into two separately balloted portions – Mid and West Matukituki – for the ROAR period during the months of March and April. The boundary follows the ridge dividing Rob Roy Stream from the upper West Matukituki Valley.

Access

To access different parts of this block you can:

• Drive to the Raspberry Creek car park, 54 km from Wanaka on the Mt Aspiring Road. Then follow the West Matukituki Valley Track to the Rob Roy Valley or Aspiring Hut.
• Drive to Cameron Flat, 48 km from Wanaka on the Mt Aspiring Road, and if the river is low cross here and follow the East Matukituki Valley Track to the Glacier Burn.
• Drive to the Otago Boys High School swingbridge, 51 km from Wanaka on the Mt Aspiring Road, and cross it to access the steep Homestead Peak faces.

All three access routes cross private land, and you need landholder permission for hunting access.

There are no helicopter landing sites in this block. Access is by foot only.

Dogs are not allowed in this block as it is part of Mount Aspiring National Park.

Prohibited firearms

The use of shotguns, shotgun-rifle combos, .22 calibre and rim-fire firearms are prohibited on public conservation land unless stated otherwise.

If you plan to cross unbridged rivers or side streams, know how to cross safely and be prepared for if you cannot cross.

Do not cross if the river or stream is flooded, you cannot find safe entry and exit points or are unsure it’s safe. Turn back or wait for the river to drop. If in doubt, stay out.
