About this hut

Sit on the deck and enjoy views out to the Taranaki coastline, or go for a short walk to photograph reflections of Mt Taranaki in the Pouakai tarns.

An hour's tramp will take you down into the mighty Ahukawakawa Swamp with its unique flora and fauna.

  • Heating from a wood burner. Wood is supplied.

Getting there

Times from nearest road ends:

  • Mangorei Road end via Mangorei Track – 2 hours, 5 km.
  • Kaiauai carpark via Kaiauai Track – 5 to 6 hours, 10 km.
  • North Egmont Visitor Centre via Holly Hut Track – 5 to 7 hours, 12 km.

  • Adult (18+ years): $15 per night
  • Youth (11 - 17 years): $7.50 per night
  • Child/Infant: (0 - 10 years): free

Before you go, buy 1 Serviced Hut Ticket (green for adults, orange for youth) or 3 Standard Hut Tickets (blue for adults, yellow for youth) for each night's stay. Put these in the honesty box at the hut. Or buy a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most Serviced and Standard huts for a 6 or 12 month period.

From November 2020, bookings will be required for this site. Bookings will open on 2 November 2020 at 9:30 am, for trips from 2 November 2020.

You'll need an account on our booking system for campsites, huts and lodges to make a booking.

Know before you go

During the busy summer months it's a good idea to bring your own sleeping mat - just in case the bunks are full.

All drone use must be authorised by DOC

A concession is required to fly a drone on any public conservation land.
