Note: There are some DOC administered reserves where freedom camping is allowed for self-contained vehicles only. They are listed on this page. For all other DOC administered reserves, even if not listed here, freedom camping is prohibited under section 44 (1) of the Reserves Act.

Additional sites where freedom camping is prohibited

In accordance with the Freedom Camping Act 2011, DOC will be prohibiting freedom camping at some additional sites on public conservation land. These changes come into effect on 9 December 2022.

Prohibited means that no freedom camping will be permitted.

The Freedom Camping Notice for each site is listed below – these define where freedom camping will be prohibited at these sites. They are also available electronically (or in paper form for a small fee) at DOC offices.
