About this campsite

Camp beside the Tairua River and explore the old gold mining area around the steep cliffs. Maximum number of people - 200.

Facilities

  • Toilets and a rubbish collection area.
  • A camp manager services the campsite during summer.

Getting there

The Broken Hills Campsite near the end of Puketui Valley Road is located beside the Tairua River amongst native bush. Hikaui/Puketui Road, 4 km off SH 25.

Turn off SH 25 at Hikuai opposite the Pauanui turnoff. Follow Puketui Valley Road to end.

Make sure you access the campsite by the Puketui Valley Road entrance: The two entrance roads – Puketui Valley Road and Puketui Road – to Broken Hills don't connect and a stream crossing is required between them.

The campsite pass for rental campervans can be used at this campsite.

The DOC/NZMCA Campsite Pass can be used at this campsite except between 20 December and the end of Waitangi weekend.

Backcountry Hut Passes cannot be used at this campsite.

Know before you go

  • Fires are not permitted in the Broken Hills area and campsite.
  • Charcoal burners are not permitted.
  • Only gas or spirit burners can be used for cooking.
  • Dogs and all other domestic animals are strictly prohibited.
  • Toilets available at campsite. Pit toilets are not allowed.
  • Certified, selfcontained campervan owners may use their own chemical toilet.
  • Mobile coverage is limited.
  • Be considerate to other campers and keep noise levels down.
  • Camping outside designated areas is not permitted.
  • Water taken directly from the river or streams should be boiled or treated before drinking to reduce the risk of infection.
