This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

About this hunting block

Animals present are pigs and red deer.

General information

This block covers the Mill Creek Scenic Reserve.

Beech/tawhai forest covers much of the area, with some tussock grasslands and mixed scrub on the tops. It is mostly rolling country but there are some steep bluffs in the lower main gorge.

Hunting is not permitted from the cattle yards to the block boundary, or within 500 m of any houses.

Roar period information

This block is split into two roar blocks.

Blocks are allocated through a ballot draw and are allocated for a three or four-day period.

The balloted period is for the 20 March to 20 April.

  • Applications are only accepted through the official application form, available on this page.
  • Applications will be accepted from 1 October.
  • The last date applications will be accepted is 20 November.
  • The application form will be limited to two choices.
  • You can submit only one application per party.
  • All party members must be listed on the application.
  • No individual may be involved in more than one application.

Applicants will be advised by e-text of the outcome of the draw by the first Friday in December.

Successful applicants must confirm their block before the third Friday in December, via email or phone.

If confirmation has not been received by the third Friday in December, the booking will be cancelled, and the block reallocated – no reminders will be issued.

Reallocation of blocks

Any unconfirmed blocks will be available to parties that were unsuccessful in the ballot draw.

Any remaining blocks will be made available to all hunters who did not enter the draw.

Permit issue

The roar permits will be emailed/mailed out to roar block holders on or after 23 January.

Administration fee

At this stage, no administration fee will be charged for the roar ballot, although this fee may be introduced in future ballots to cover the costs associated with administering the roar block system.

Access

Access is via Waipori Falls Road from Berwick, then up Koefords Road to the cattle yards. The road this far is suitable for all vehicles; from here access is on foot.

There are access routes that cross private land, but you will need landholder permission to use these routes.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed in this block with a hunting permit. If accessing the block over private land, you must have landholder permission to take your dog.
