Cloustons Mine Track

Located in Kahurangi National Park and Mount Arthur area in the Nelson/Tasman region

Walk this track as part of a day walk circuit from Flora car park.

The access road into the Mount Arthur area (Graham Valley Road) is steep and narrow and prone to corrugations and slips – check any alerts for road status. During the winter months a 4WD vehicle is recommended to access Flora carpark. Chains may be needed if snow and ice are present.

Park at Flora carpark and walk 5.8 km along a 4WD road to the start of Cloustons Mine Track.

The track climbs steadily on a semi benched and graded track through mature native bush. The Cloustons mine site is reached 4.2 km from the start of the track.

Clouston’s mine is a 124-metre horizontal drive put in around 1911. A miner’s hut was also constructed in the bush below the mine site.

From the mine a route (20 min) continues to Gordons Pyramid on the Tableland Circuit which gives a panoramic view of the Mt Arthur tablelands and surrounding area.

A loop track can be completed by walking to Mt Arthur Hut via Gordons Pyramid then down Mt Arthur Hut Walk back to Flora carpark.

Flora car park is 75 km from Nelson and 36 km from Motueka.

The Motueka Valley Highway links Nelson and Motueka. Turn off this road at Ngātīmoti and cross the Motueka River. Turn left onto Motueka River West Bank Road, then right into Graham Valley Road, which climbs steeply to the car park. The last 5.8 km is unsealed and turning a vehicle on the road can be difficult. 4WD is recommended at all times of the year.

The track suitable for experienced walkers fit enough to walk for 4-6 hours in a sub-alpine/alpine environment.

Warm clothing and rainwear should be carried year-round.

Wasps are present fro December to May.
