Stanfield Hut

Located in Ruahine Forest Park in the Hawke’s Bay region

This is a standard eight-bunk hut in the Hawke's Bay region. It’s a great destination for a day walk or a good place for hunters and trampers to overnight.
  • Water source – rainwater tank
  • Heating source – woodburner

Stanfield Hut was built in 1965 by the New Zealand Forest Service and was named after Bill (William) Stanfield, a local bushman and farmer.

In December 2021 this hut was renovated by Backcountry Trust volunteers. Paint was supplied free of charge by Dulux.

Fees

  • Adult (18+ years): $15 per night
  • Youth (5–17 years): $7.50 per night
  • Child/Infant (0–4 years): free

Before you go, buy a hut ticket online for each night's stay. You can print or display the digital ticket on your device, or write down the ticket and confirmation numbers to take with you. You can also buy a Backcountry Hut Pass that allows you to stay at non-bookable DOC huts for a 12 month period.

Route to Stanfield Hut via Tamaki River West Branch

Time: 2.5 hours one way
Distance: 5.1 km

This river route is not a DOC managed track or route. Do not expect DOC markers or track formation.

Commencing from the Tamaki West picnic area, the river bed route is unmarked but generally easy to follow. It’s dangerous to cross or follow the river when the water level is high which can occur during or after heavy rain. How to cross rivers safely.
