About this hunting block

Animals present are red deer and chamois in low to moderate numbers.

General information

This block includes steep beech/tawhai forested slopes on the true left of the Craigie Burn below the forks at E1284200, N5087200. Above the forks the terrain is river flats, and subalpine shrubland/tussock grassland slopes. The whole west branch, and the head of the east branch, are included in the block.

This block is balloted for the roar period during the months of March and April.

The use of shotguns, shotgun-rifle combos, .22 calibre and rim-fire firearms are prohibited on public conservation land unless stated otherwise.

Access

There are three ways to access this block:

  • Aircraft access is by DOC approved aircraft concessionaires. Contact local helicopter operators for more information.
  • Foot or boat access requires landowner permission, as pastoral lease land need to be crossed to access the conservation area. On foot from the true right of the Makarora river – this access is dependent on the flow of Wilkin and Makarora rivers.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed in this block. No separate permit required but you must have landholder permission.

Stay safe when crossing rivers

If you plan to cross unbridged rivers, know how to cross safely, and be prepared for if or when you cannot cross.

Do not cross if the river is flooded, or you cannot find safe entry and exit points or you're unsure it's safe. Turn back or wait for the river to drop. If in doubt, stay out.
