About this hunting block

Animals present are red deer and chamois in low to moderate numbers.

General information

This block consists of the Albert Burn catchment above Albert Burn Hut, and below the hut, the beech/tawhai forest on the true left. Beech/tawhai forest above the hut is extensive, giving way to subalpine shrubland and tussock grassland on the tops and in the upper reaches of the valley.

The block divides into two separately balloted portions – Albert Burn and Upper Albert Burn - for the roar period during the months of March and April. The boundary is at Junction Flat, about three hours upstream of Albert Burn Hut.

Access

There are three ways to access this block:

• Private or commercial boat across lake
• Private aircraft with landing permits or chartered aircraft from Makarora township
• On foot from the true right of the Makarora River – this access is dependent on the flow of Wilkin and Makarora Rivers. It also crosses pastoral lease land, so you need to contact the landholder for permission. From the Craigie Burn a cattle track leads to the mouth of the Albert Burn.

Stay safe when crossing rivers

If you plan to cross unbridged rivers, know how to cross safely, and be prepared for if or when you cannot cross.

Do not cross if the river is flooded, or you cannot find safe entry and exit points or you're unsure it's safe. Turn back or wait for the river to drop. If in doubt, stay out.
