Onamalutu Walks are family-friendly, providing easy and flat access to explore the only significant remnant valley floor podocarp forest of the Wairau Plains.
The forest features giant kahikatea, mataī and tōtara trees which tower to nearly 50 metres in height. You will likely hear the melodies of tūī and bellbirds as you explore the forest tracks.
There are several access points that lead to Ōhinemahuta/Onamalutu River and its swimming holes which can be enjoyed during warmer months.
Turn of SH 6 west of Blenheim into Northbank Road. Follow for approx. 6 km. Turn right into Onamalutu Road and follow for 7 km to Onamalutu Campsite.
Access to the walking tracks is from the southern end of Onamalutu Campsite.
- Car parking is available in Onamalutu campsite.
- Do not park under trees as limbs or trees may fall at any time.
- The track is suitable for prams.
