The track is well formed and easy to follow. Starting at Longview Hut (1170 m elevation), it follows alpine tussock tops and offers panoramic views. 

Towards the end of the track it drops down into beech forest. The final descent to Makaretu Hut is steep. Cross the stream and you will arrive at Makaretu Hut (575 m elevation).

This track runs between Longview hut and Makaretu hut.
