To get to Piripiri Hut, travel from mid Pohangina Hut via the unmarked ridge. This trip should only be attempted by people with good fitness and a high level of experience in navigating and travelling in backcountry and remote areas.

Access to the Ngamoko tops from Piripiri stream through the leather wood is not maintained and overgrown. The stream bed between Piripiri Hut and the Pohangina River crosses private land and permission is required to travel this section.

Stay safe when crossing rivers

If you plan to cross unbridged rivers, know how to cross safely and be prepared for if you cannot cross.

Do not cross if the river is flooded, you cannot find safe entry and exit points or are unsure it’s safe. Turn back or wait for the river to drop. If in doubt, stay out.
