Tsunami risk at Milford Sound – a big earthquake could trigger a large tsunami in Piopiotahi Milford Sound.

From the car parking area at the rear of the café at Milford Sound, pass in front of the two brown buildings to the south of the carpark and towards Donald Sutherland’s grave.
To the left of this is a brown hedge - continue on the path around this to the edge of the bush. Follow the track from this point.
There are a number of steps up to the lookout that offers impressive views of spectacular Milford Sound.
Return the same way.
This track begins from the carpark area at the rear of the cafe at Milford Sound.
Milford Sound is 120 km from Te Anau along the Milford Road (SH94).
Take sandfly repellent with you.
Earthquake and tsunami risk at Piopiotahi Milford Sound
A large earthquake or tsunami is extremely unlikely during your visit. Even so, these hazards do pose a risk to life at Piopiotahi Milford Sound. If one occurs while you are there, your options to stay safe are limited.
What to do in an earthquake:
- DROP, COVER and HOLD until shaking stops.
- If the earthquake feels LONG or STRONG, get GONE. Move up and away from the water as quickly as possible.
- If you see or hear a landslide, move up and away from the water as quickly as possible.
