In 1952 the Motu River was suggested as a potential hydro dam site, resulting in Otipi Road being built. The river is now protected by a national water conservation order and the road is used by mountain bikers for recreation instead.
From the parking area, use the ford to cross the river and follow the old road up into the Raukumara Ranges. The road climbs to 960 m, follows the ridgeline and descends steeply to the Motu River.
From Opotiki: East of Opotiki, turn off SH35 at Omarumutu and follow Motu Road for approx 20 km to Toatoa. Follow Takaputahi Road to the park boundary.
From Gisborne: Follow SH2 north to Matawai, then turn on to Motu Road to reach Toatoa. From Toatoa follow the Takaputahi Road to the park boundary.
This is a remote ride - be prepared. Expect changeable weather.
This is a shared-use track. Follow the mountain bikers code: respect others, respect the rules, respect the track.
