Crosbies Hut tracks
Located in Coromandel Forest Park and Kauaeranga Valley in the Coromandel region
Introduction
There are seven different tracks to Crosbies Hut.Various from 8.9 km to 13 km one way
Dog access
Whangaiterenga to Karaka Track
Time: 5 hrs
Distance: 9.5 km
Start point: Whangaiterenga Camp
The track rises steadily from the Kauaeranga Valley to Orange Peel Corner, crossing the Whangaiterenga Stream three times.
Do not attempt a river crossing during or after heavy rain. Check with the Kauaeranga Visitor Centre if there has been heavy rain.
Waiotahi Track
Time: 5 hrs
Distance: 13 km
Start point: Waiotahi Rd, Thames
This track has a steady ascent and has the best-formed tracks.
The Waiotahi track has good all-weather access because it only has small side stream crossings. The track is a steady climb and well-formed giving occasional views over the Firth.
Karaka Track
Time: 5 hrs
Distance: 12.9 km
Start point: Karaka Rd, Thames
The Karaka is more rugged than the Waiotahi with some boggy sections. There are great views from ‘Red Rocks’ looking towards Table Mountain. The Karaka Track connects with the Waiotahi Track after around 2 hours.
Tararu Track
Time: 4 hrs
Distance: 10 km
Start point: Tararu Rd, Tararu – Very limited parking.
This is the quickest track to Crosbies Hut. However, it is the steepest and often has muddy sections. There are some gold mining relics from the mining era on the track.
Te Puru Track
Time: 5 hrs
Distance: 8.9 km
Start point: Te Puru Creek Rd, Te Puru
The Te Puru track has several stream crossings and can get quite muddy. We do not advise doing a river crossing during or after heavy rain.
The track rises steeply until it meets the top ridge. It is around one hour from the top of the ridge until Crosbies Hut.
Waiomu Track
Time: 5 hrs
Distance: 9.3 km
Start point: Waiomu Valley Rd, Waiomu
The first hour of this track is along the scenic bridged Waiomu Kauri Grove track. This track takes you into sections of mature kauri forest. The track then becomes a tramping track and rises steeply up to the top ridge track. From here Crosbies Hut is reached after around one hour.
Tapu-Coroglen Rd to Crosbies Hut
Time: 4 hrs
Distance: 9.2 km
Start point: Summit of Tapu-Coroglen Rd, Coromandel – limited parking. The track signage is not obvious from the road but the track begins where the road crosses the ridge. This is approximately 3-4 km past the ‘Square Kauri’ track if coming from the western side of the Peninsula.
This track has the least elevation gain and has no streams to cross.
It follows the rolling top ridge track. It can be very muddy underfoot. This track is a good option if trampers can be dropped off as parking is limited.
