About this campsite

Surrounded by a mix of farmland, holiday homes and sand dunes, the campsite is sheltered and overlooks a tidal stream.

Facilities and services

  • Campsite serviced 1 December to end of February.
  • Shop and cafe approximately 4 km north, and also 6km to the south of the campsite.

Getting there

On the South end of Medlands Beach, Great Barrier Island.

From Auckland via passenger and car ferry to Tryphena or Port FitzRoy, or air travel to Claris or Okiwi. Rental cars available for hire from Tryphena and Claris by arrangement.

Access: Narrow gravel roads to campsite, off main sealed road.

The campsite pass for rental campervans cannot be used at this campsite.

The DOC/NZMCA Campsite Pass can be used at this campsite except between 20 December and the end of Waitangi weekend.

Backcountry Hut Passes cannot be used at this campsite.


  • Bookings should preferably be completed online. Phone and email bookings incur a service fee.
  • Changes and additions to bookings will incur a fee up to $10 per alteration.

Know before you go

  • No open fires are permitted, bring your own cooker or gas BBQ.
  • Vehicle access to beach is not permitted, except at south end for boat launch.
  • We recommend boiling water before use.


There is no free rubbish collection on Aotea/Great Barrier Island. There is a rubbish truck, which only accepts orange rubbish bags that are available from camp hosts at DOC campgrounds. These rubbish bags are $4 each. You can also take your own rubbish to the Claris landfill site.

DOC only provides recycling bins during the summer peak season for:

  • bottles
  • cans, and
  • plastics.

Behaviour and alcohol

You'll be asked to leave if you behave in a disorderly or offensive way (e.g. excessive alcohol, using foul language, noisy or riotous). Drinking in public and the public display of alcohol are not permitted.
