For trout anglers in the Taupo region July 1 marks the start of a new trout fishing season and heralds the imminent arrival of large numbers of rainbow trout in local rivers. The new season also means new licences, so everyone fishing in the area will need a 2018/19 Taupo fishing licence.

Annual fishing licences can be purchased from 25 June and are valid from 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019. Costs remain unchanged.

DOC Taupo Fishery Community Ranger James Barnett says it’s easy to buy a new Taupo Fishing Licence.

“Anyone with access to the internet can visit the Taupo fishery web page and click the ‘buy a licence’ button. The system will take you through various licence options, ask for your details, request payment, and you’re done! For those who prefer a more traditional approach, simply pop into a local licence agent and they will help.”

Various licence options are available to match different circumstances. Most people will opt for an Annual Adult Licence but anglers who intend to go fishing with a partner or children might find a Family Licence proves more cost effective.

“It also allows more flexibility which could lead to more time fishing with the family,” James added.

The new season also presents a good opportunity for anglers to refresh their understanding of fishery regulations and reference the Taupo fishing district map, which details the open seasons for all fishing locations across the region.

By purchasing a fishing licence anglers are making a positive contribution to the maintenance of their fishery. From practical maintenance work, such as cutting access tracks, to world leading fishery science. Over 30 years of fishery data allows the fishery management team to identify trends and patterns, which in turn informs fishery management decisions.

It should be noted that Taupo fishing licences are only valid in the Taupo region. Anglers who intend to fish other areas will require a Fish & Game Fishing Licence.
