Strategic documents
Read the strategic documents at the heart of the Predator Free 2050 movement.

DOC is the government’s lead agency responsible for the Predator Free 2050 programme. We develop the strategy, action plans and progress reports for the programme with input from communities and collaborators.

Strategy 2026–2030

The latest Predator Free 2050 Strategy was launched in March 2026.

It sets out New Zealand’s plan to eradicate our most damaging introduced predators — rats, mustelids, possums and now feral cats — so native species and ecosystems can thrive again.

Public submissions report

To help inform the revision of the Strategy, we asked New Zealanders what they thought about our proposed goals, the target species list and what support was needed. The responses are summarised in a report.

Action plan 2026–2030

The latest Predator Free 2050 Action Plan was launched in March 2026.

It supports the Strategy by presenting a fuller set of goals and outlining the priority actions needed to achieve them. It has been created by some of those involved in Predator Free 2050 to guide investment and involvement in the programme.

It is a working document. It will be updated regularly as we gain knowledge and insights, and as we evaluate progress towards our goals.

To inform the review of the Predator Free 2050 Strategy, we asked Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research (now the Bioeconomy Science Institute) to produce the following insights reports.

These reports are on topics of interest to the communities and organisations that work toward Predator Free 2050.

In the 2025/26 budget, the Government decided to close the crown-owned company Predator Free 2050 Ltd to streamline the Predator Free 2050 system and remove duplication.

Their work is now absorbed into DOC’s existing activities as part of its role as the lead government agency for the programme.
