About this hunting block

General information

The Blue Mountain Conservation Area hunting block offers year round hunting for wild animals.

It has moderate to steep slopes and ranges from 650 m altitude at Mowbray River to 1653 m altitude at Tripps Peak. Tributaries of Mowbray River are on the western side of the block with tributaries of Andrews Stream on the Eastern side. The block is 2742 ha in size.

The Four Peaks Range Conservation Area is 370 ha in size. It is on the eastern slopes of Devils Peak (1587 m altitude).

Note that there is no public walking access between the blocks.

Tall tussockland dominates much of both blocks. Grey shrubland is associated with stream sides, bluffs and rocky slopes. Rockland, cushionfield and herbfield occur at higher elevations, though there are large areas of scree.

Access

The hunting blocks are located at the north-eastern end of the Four Peaks Range.

This area is accessible from Fairlie via Clayton and Lochaber Roads.

There is no marked public walking access to the blocks.

The blocks can be accessed by helicopter and approval will be provided if an appropriate landing permit is obtained.

Stay safe when crossing rivers

If you plan to cross unbridged rivers, know how to cross safely and be prepared for if you cannot cross.

Do not cross if the river is flooded, you cannot find safe entry and exit points or are unsure it’s safe. Turn back or wait for the river to drop. If in doubt, stay out.
