Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre closure

The visitor centre will be closed on the following dates:

  • Saturday and Sunday, 21 – 22 May 2022
  • Saturday and Sunday, 28 – 29 May 2022.

Check if a DOC visitor centre is open

Call before visiting as some visitor centres may have to physically close due to staff shortages.

The Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre is located at Whakapapa Village, the main gateway into Tongariro National Park – New Zealand’s first national park and dual world heritage area. 

The centre was first established in the 1960s and was redeveloped in 2001.

Opening hours

8 am – 4:30 pm daily

Closed Christmas day (25 December).

  • 24 hour access foyer with weather and track information.
